Tracing and tutorials!

Journal Entry: Wed Sep 9, 2015, 5:12 AM

Hi there!

Today I wanted to talk about something that brings a lot of controversy. Tracing.

I honestly used that "technique" when I was younger. I started to draw because of anime like Pokemon, DragonballZ, Sailor Moon and CardCaptor Sakura. So I traced a lot of things coming from those shows.

Of course tracing and pretending that the art is yours is NOT ok. But personally, if you are a beginner at art and you want to make a pose for a character, tracing can be ok.

Even though it might be better if you learn to draw using step by step or skeletons, tracing will make you learn to draw by heart at the beginning.
So when you have to make hard positions afterward, it can be more tricky.

I wouldn't have anything against someone tracing my art, but if someone traces, they HAVE to tell what the original art is.
It the same as base art. People making position references (I think) with exiting art from anime or other sources. I put tracing and bases in the same category.

As long as you put the references, I have nothing against it.

After using tracing, I started to try to copy the drawings side by side. After that I started to modify the hair and clothes from them to create my own characters. And things started to evolve. I didn't want to copy and modify, I wanted my own style and my own characters. So I stopped.

Even now I can use small references. I take them from real life most of the time. And I often use myself. Taking the position yourself is a great thing to do. It makes you understand it better. Of course there is some impossible position to take, but it can help.

On another subject, I taught a friend how to color wood two days ago. And I was thinking that maybe I could do tutorials videos, or online classes, for coloring with colored pencils, or markers, or anatomy, or anything that could interest people. It's still just an idea, and I won't have time to make it come to life for a while, but it would help if you'd tell me if you are interested about this kind of content. ^^-

Thank you for your time, and have a great day/night/morning. ^^-

With love,
